Crown’s 2008 Melbourne Poker Championship Begins
Think you know when to holdem and when to foldem? It’s all hands on decks, cause it’s time to lay your cards on the table and battle it out for one of the most prestigious and sought-after titles on the Australian poker calendar – the 2008 Melbourne Poker Championship – beginning on Sunday 11 May.
This year’s Championship boasts twelve official tournaments and promises to be the biggest and best yet, highlighted by the $1100 Main Event, a 10-player winner-takes-all $100,000 Challenge along with the $5200 High Stakes tournament.
The first Melbourne Poker Championship was held in 2002 where a modest field of 66 players took their seats in the $300 buy-in No Limit Holdem Event.
Last year’s Main Event was played over two days with 449 players from all over the country. The buy-in rose to $1100, generating a prize pool of just under $450,000. Haibo Chu emerged victorious over Daniel Sequenzia with Koun Chouy third.
With this years prize pool expected to tip over $500,000, the 2008 Melbourne Poker Championships will arguably be one of the most enthralling, with a massive field of players expected to compete, some of those include hometown hero Joe Hachem, defending champion Haibo Chu, Australia’s highest female money earner Sarah ‘Aussie Sarah’ Bilney and 2006 Aussie Millions Champion Lee Nelson.
With tournaments available from as little as $25, the 2008 Melbourne Poker Championship is designed to identify Australia’s top poker talent and is expected to attract over 4,000 plus hopefuls from across the country all vying for a slice of more than a million dollars in prize money on offer during the fifteen-day 2008 Melbourne Poker Championship.
