Weekend In Review – Memorial Day Blues

November 13, 2009 |

With the long Memorial Day weekend distracting a lot of poker players and Indiana Jones back in action, all major poker tournaments experienced huge declines. Most tournaments actually plummeted or matched their season lows.

The PokerStars Sunday Million was the only one to avoid an overlay with the 6,745 players generating a prize pool of $1,349,000. This was the lowest turnout since February 3rd for this particular event.

The final 3 players left standing decided on a 3 way deal according to the PokerStars chopping rules with rythman being the official winner who collected $137,254. Runner up spot went to tapatapa who received a higher $139,726 for his efforts.

The lowest attendance since April 6th at the Full Tilt Poker $750,000 Guaranteed Tournament meant that Full Tilt had to pay $34,000 in overlay to match the guarantee of their flagship tournament. This is very surprising since Full Tilt had a very successful FTOPS that finished last week.

After all said and done, msmatrix survived the onslaught of 3,579 other players to receive first place cheque worth a massive $132,788.

The Bodog $100,000 Guaranteed Tournament had only 618 players show up for this event, the lowest since March 23rd when 603 entrants decided it was worth their while. An overlay of $38,200 was more than 38% of the total prize pool that the people at Bodog had to pay from their own pocket.

Basebaldy who won this tournament again on May 4th managed to beat fin2win to collect $23,600 for his efforts. The latter won a respectable $13,600 for his second place finish.

Finally, the UlimateBet $200,000 Guaranteed Tournament had the distinction of being the tournament with the largest overlay of the weekend. A huge $45,000 was needed after 775 players showed up. Week to week, this event lost 81 players.

Heads up action between whatarunaa and frozencanuck resulted with the former freezing out his opponent to claim the $46,000 first place prize. His opponent collected $28,000 for his troubles.
